The Dordogne Property Agency guide to RSS
What is RSS?
RSS (often called Really Simple Syndication) is a simple and efficient way to receive updates from your favourite websites. In fact it uses an automated web feed format to publish frequently updated content, such as blog entries, news headlines, latest properties, property listings, etc in a standardised format. An RSS feed (or "channel") will usually include a summary description, a photo, features, etc.
What are the benefits to the reader?
RSS allows internet users to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the websites they are interested in. They save time by not needing to visit each site individually. They can also improve privacy by not needing to join each site's email newsletter. A further benefit is that the user can combine feeds from many websites into one place.
What are the benefits to the website owner and publisher of the RSS feed?
RSS feeds benefit property website owners by letting them update changes and additions to their property listings automatically to anyone subscribing. More and more websites are recognising the popularity of RSS feeds and the number of sites offering them is growing rapidly.
How does it work?
RSS feeds can be read using simple software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader", or "aggregator", which can be web-based, desktop-based, or mobile-device-based. The user subscribes to a feed by entering into the reader the feed's URL or by clicking an RSS feed icon in a web browser that initiates the subscription process. The RSS reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new listings, downloads any updates that it finds, and provides a simple user interface to monitor and read the feeds. RSS allows users to avoid manually inspecting all of the websites they are interested in, and instead subscribe to websites that interest them and to receive all new content when it becomes available.
RSS Readers
Some examples of RSS Readers are: Google Reader, Microsoft Outlook Reader, Yahoo Reader
Google Chrome
In order to view an RSS feed in Google's Chrome browser it is necessary to add the RSS Chrome Extension. This is a very simple process and the steps are as follows:
Chrome will now display RSS feeds.
